Spray Foam Insulation, Part 2

I’m interested, but how much is this going to cost me? There’s no getting around this. Spray foam is more expensive. While there is a price difference between open cell and closed cell, you can expect to spend about 3 times more than conventional insulation, no matter which you choose. Yikes! That seems like a lot. How long do I have to stay in my house to recover that cost? Depending on your energy usage, it will take 3-5 years to recover the initial installation cost. However, after that time, the savings are tremendous. If you’re planning to live in your house more than 5 years, you will recover the additional cost and then some. So, how long will it last after the 5 years? We have good news for you! Current studies show that spray foam insulations last at least 20 years. In fact, there is no indication that the spray foam shouldn’t last well beyond 20 years. So, you’ll have plenty of time to get those additional savings. Well, that seems great, but what else should I consider? Not every HVAC company is experienced in working with spray foam insulation. Humidity control is key with spray foam, so you’ll want to make sure to choose a company that is familiar with the product. Will spray foam meet Houston and Harris County building codes? Spray foams are covered in our area’s building codes. Properly installed, spray foam insulation will meet area building codes. Can’t I just install spray foam myself? I’ve seen kits on the internet. We don’t recommend DIY spray foam insulation. In order to get the best benefits in the most safe way possible, professional installation is recommended.
