How Long Will My Remodel Take?

In an earlier blog we discussed some things you need to consider before starting the remodeling process in your home.  But, one key question is always on people’s minds.  Just how long will my remodel take? How long will it take to remodel my bathroom? Bath Project 4A bathroom remodel may take as little as 4 to 5 weeks depending on the size and finishes, but there are many things you need to consider during the process.  A simple “facelift” may only require a few changes, such as new counters, flooring, paint and updated fixtures.  The overall time required for the project is less than a full blown remodel.  But there are a number of things that could add to the timeframe.  Are your selections a “special order” as opposed to something stock from the shelves?  Specially designed counters, fixtures or even new high tech gadgets will require more time to obtain and install.  A granite counter-top can take 7 to 10 working days to get in.  Glass shower enclosures can take 2 to 3 weeks from the time the bathroom tile is completed. Are you “gutting” the room back to the studs for a whole new look?  If you are enlarging or reconfiguring it to make major changes to the overall structure, this could add weeks to your timeline. How about my kitchen? Custom Home 5The time it takes to renovate your kitchen will, of course, depend upon the scope of the project.  Obviously, tearing out the whole kitchen to move appliances and walls will take longer than cosmetic changes, such as replacing the sink and counters.  As with bathrooms, granite counter-tops take time to come in. Custom order cabinets have a lead time of at least 3-4 weeks.  An average kitchen remodel will generally take over 2 months to finish up. Some kitchen projects can take quite a bit longer than that depending on the scope of the work. Is there anything else that could affect the timeline? Have you created a design for your new project, or do you need assistance with this phase?  Design plans can take a few weeks to complete, so build in some time to ensure that your plans are ready to implement.  If your home is in the city of Houston, certain building permits may be required before work can start.  Inspectors will need to check on the project at various stages adding more than a week to the remodeling schedule. How can GB General Contractors help me organize my time around my remodel? At GB General Contractors, we have a lot of experience in managing time frames for a remodel.  The goal is to have things moving forward every day on a project.  Carpenters shouldn’t be waiting for shelving to come in to proceed; plumbers shouldn’t be waiting for sinks to come in; painters shouldn’t be finishing up one room while another has days to go before it is ready.  We know when to order the supplies so that they come in when needed, minimizing waiting times and avoiding large pieces arriving too long before they are ready to be installed. We give our clients forms to fill out with various options.  We provide information on vendor locations that can help you with your selections, so you can be fully informed about all of your choices.  We involve our interior designers in the process to help guide you to what will make you happy.  Without this help, it can be overwhelming to try and make sure all of the fine details and selections match up, and indecision can add to the timeline of your project. We will work with you to make sure the whole process runs smoothly and efficiently.  We will be with you from the initial project idea, through the design, planning and selection process until the job is complete. We will always follow up with you to ensure that you are satisfied with our work and you are enjoying your improved home. Give us a call at (281) 412-9988 and we can start discussing ideas today.]]>
